Marine industry already detects revival of demand on market

Marine industry already detects revival of demand on markets. Turnover figures for 2009 fall to 2004 levels. Close to 60% of Finnboat member enterprises forecast an increase in turnover for 2010. Total net sales for Finnboat membership in 2009 (VAT 0%, calculated on ex-factory and import prices) was EUR 419,2 million, a 40,1 % drop from the previous year.

Domestic boat sales

Domestic boat trading for 2009 was valued at EUR 97,7 million, a significant fall of 47,9 % when compared with the previous year. Based on wholesale delivery statistics, the unit sales of small craft and motorboats were as follows:

  delivered units %
below 6 meters 7410 (-35,2)
6-8 m 526 (-56,2)
8-10 m 73 (-73,0)
over 10 m 23 (-72,0)

The statistics refer to data supplied by Finnboat's small craft and motorboat manufacturers.

The trade in sailboats (over 21 feet) closely corresponded to the unit sales for other boats. In Finland, a total of 78 sailboats were sold (2008: 144 units). Imported boats continue to dominate the market for sailboats with a market share of around 80 %. Most sailboats sold were in the size class 34-40 feet (i.e. 35 boats).

In 2009, a total of 4738 new boats were recorded in the national boat register.

All sailboats and motorboats of at least 5,5 meters in length must be registered. Boats with an engine capacity of at least 15 kilowatts, i.e. over 20 hp, must also be included in the register for marine craft.

Boat exports

The export share of total Finnish marine industry production continues to be very high. The number of units and euro-value amounts however follow the general trend. According to information supplied by member enterprises, the export invoicing share of total invoicing for 2009 was over 75 %. Of export invoicing, the sailboat share was 48 %. Based on data supplied by member enterprises, the invoice value for 2009 boat exports was EUR 147,6 million, a decrease of 45,6 % compared with 2008.

Customs authority statistics for 2009 are available for the period January-October only and consequently the actual number of boats transhipped over the border for the full year is not yet known. For the January-October period, export statistics for the top ten destinations are as follow:

Country   Units   Euro value

Boat imports

Of imported boats also, customs authority statistics are available for the January-October period only. According to the statistics, the value of boat imports for the period was EUR 24,4 million (-45,5 %) All boats valued at less than EUR 840 have been excluded from the data. Wholesale deliveries of outboard engines

A total of 20219 outboard engines (-45,9 %) were delivered through Finnish importers in 2009. Of these, 13206 were supplied to the domestic market. This represents a decrease of 39,5 % from the previous year. There have been no major changes in the distribution among size classes. The largest size-class comprises engines below 15 hp. This class makes up more than 60 % of the total.

Altogether, 59 (-59,9 %) petrol-driven, sterndrive engines and 353 (-65 %) diesel versions were sold.

When the sale of outboard engines is broken down by economic region, Uusimaa (including Helsinki) is again the largest (2854 engines) followed by Varsinais-Suomi (1500) and Pirkanmaa (875). The smallest region was Keski-Pohjanmaa (157 units).
