THE NUMBER OF VISITORS TO THE 2010 HELSINKI BOAT-AFLOAT SHOW NEARLY 16,000
During four days of sunny weather, the Helsinki Boat-Afloat Show, organised for the thirteenth time at yacht club HSK, attracted 15,776 visitors. This year's show featured 281 boats and 139 exhibitors.
The boat show is organised annually by the Finnish Marine Industries Federation Finnboat and the dates for the Helsinki Boat-Afloat Show 2011 are 18-21 August.
Consumer sales on the domestic market increasing slightly
Discussions with retail dealers in August indicated a clear growth in demand. The warm summer has triggered an upsurge in boating enthusiasm that is expected to continue far into next season.
Domestic figures can be specified in the light of wholesale delivery statistics. For the January-June period, data for small craft and motorboats indicated that in unit terms 13,5% more boats were delivered on the domestic market than for the previous year. According to figures provided by enterprises who participated in Finnboat's statistical analysis, 6233 boats were delivered in Finland during the period in question.
During the same period, importers and manufacturers delivered to the nationwide sales network 5751 boats below 6 meters (+11,5 %). In the 6-8 meter class, 392 boats were delivered (+25,6 %) and in the 8-10 meter class 64 (+28 %) boats were delivered. In the largest category, i.e. boats over 10 meters, the figures also showed growth and 26 units were delivered (+52,9 %).
Consumer sales based on figures taken from the National Boat Register (i.e. boats with engines over 20 hp or boats over 5,5 meters) were down by 2,8 % compared with 2009. In all, 3015 boats were registered during the January-July period.
Boat exports to the main markets Sweden and Norway recorded brisk growth.
In unit terms, total exports for January-May increased by 7,9%. In euro-value terms, exports fell by 11,2 %, closing at EUR 66,1 million. According to customs' statistics a total of 4167 boats were exported during the period January-May.
Boat exports to the five main export destinations for Jan-May were as follows:
1. Sweden 23,7 m Euro and 1316 units (+74,9 %)
2. Norway 22,6 m Euro and 1920 units (+27,8 %)
3. Germany 1,9 m Euro, 198 units (56,6 %)
4. Russia 1,8 m Euro, 65 units (-77,6 %)
5. Greenland 1,6 m Euro, 28 units (-29 %).
Boat imports decline yet again
For the January-May period, in euro-value terms most boats imported came from Sweden (1,9 m Euro), followed by France (1,7 m Euro) and Great Britain (1,3 m Euro). In unit terms also, most boats were imported from Sweden (50 boats). During the period under review, a total of 747 boats were imported (+0,5 %) at a value of 11,8 m Euro (-24,7 %).
Outboard engine sales grow by 13% on the domestic market
Total wholesale deliveries of outboard engines for the January-June period were slightly down (-7,2 %). The total figures include re-exports which represented a 27 % share of total deliveries. Altogether 14,800 engines were delivered, of which 10,734 were delivered on the domestic market (+13 %).
Based on figures supplied by Finnboat member enterprises, aggregate 2009 turnover for the marine industry and trade was approximately 419,2 m Euro (VAT 0%). Of this sum, industry exports accounted for some 147,6 m Euro.
