The Helsinki Boat-Afloat Show will now be organised for the seventeenth time at the Helsingfors Segelklubb (HSK) in Lauttasaari. All in all, the 37th boat-afloat show organised in Helsinki will again fill the jetties and land-based sites with boats and other marine industry products. There are 251 boats on show, of which 20 are sailboats. All land-based exhibition sites have been sold out. Altogether 127 exhibitors are participating.
New boat registrations in Finland at last year's level
The number of boats subject to mandatory registration (i.e. over 20 hp; more than 5,5m) can be considered a fair indication of total domestic consumer sales. According to the statistics, by the end of July 3025 boats has been registered (- 2,5 %) this year.
Domestic sales figures can also be determined on the basis of wholesale delivery statistics. For the period Jan-June, the wholesale deliveries of small craft and motorboats indicated that in unit terms, 9,8 % fewer boats than for last year were delivered on the domestic market. Figures provided by enterprises who participated in Finnboat's annual statistical analysis showed that 4832 boats were delivered in Finland during the same period.
During the Jan-June period, importers and manufacturers supplied 4438 boats below 6 meters to their sales networks (- 9,7 %). In the 6-8 meter class, 343 boats were delivered (- 9,4 %) and 35 boats in the 8-10m class (- 10,2 %). In the largest category, i.e. boats over 10 meters, 16 were delivered (- 31 %).
The above figures do not include sailboats. During the period Jan-July, 29 new sailboats were registered (- 40 %).
For the period January to May, the value of Finnish Marine Industry exports (based on customs' statistics) increased by 19,8 % to EUR 69,4 million. The main export destinations were once again Norway and Sweden.
In unit terms, total exports for the same period increased by 5,2 %. Customs' authority statistics indicate that altogether 4469 boats were exported to 31 countries during the period.
Boat exports to the five main export destinations for January-May were as follows:
(- 1,7 %)
(+ 23,6 %)
(+ 18,3 %)
4. Hong Kong
(+ 36,6 %)
For the Jan-May period, most boats imported (in value terms) came from Great Britain (i.e. 3,4m euro, 9 units) followed by Poland (1,49 m euro, 124 units) and the USA (1,15m euro, 67 units). Total boat imports for this same period were valued at 13,7m euro (- 28,4 %).
At this stage, outboard engine statistics are available at the wholesale delivery level for the January-June 2014 period only. In total, 22164 engines were delivered through Finnish importers (i.e. domestic sales + re-exports). Compared with the same period last year this represents a fall of 10,8 %. Of the total, 10335 (-1 2,3 %) were delivered on the domestic market.
Based on data supplied by Finnboat member enterprises, 2013 turnover for the marine industry and trade as a whole was approximately 460,7 m euro (VAT 0%). Of this sum, industry exports (i.e. boats and equipment) accounted for some 176,1 m euro.
