HSK jetties again fully booked for the 2016 Helsinki Boat Afloat Show. Powerful growth in boat exports. New boat registrations at last year's level.
The Helsinki Boat Afloat Show is been organised for the nineteenth time at the Helsingfors Segelklubb (HSK) in the suburb of Lauttasaari. In all, the 39th Boat Afloat Show in Helsinki has again filled the exhibition area with boats, yachts and boating related products. There are 259 boats on show, of which 20 are sailboats. A total of 124 exhibitors are participating in the event.
New boat registrations in Finland at last year's level
Based on available statistics, the number of boats subject to mandatory registration (i.e. over 20 hp; over 5,5m) can be considered an indication of total consumer sales. According to the figures, 3094 boats were registered by the end of July (-1,2 %). Of these, 22 new sailboats were registered (compared with 12 in 2015).
When the registration statistics were checked on the basis of urban centers and in unit terms (for Jan-July 2016), the five largest local authorities were as follows:
Helsinki 281 units
Based on provinces the above statistics indicated that the Province of Uusimaa was first (27,3%), with Varsinais-Suomi second (15,3 %) and Pirkanmaa third (8,6 %). The least number of boats were registered in Kainuu Province (0,26 %).
63% of all boats registered were below 5,5 meters in length.
The value of Finnish Marine Industry exports for the period January to May (customs' statistics) increased by 68 % when compared with the previous year, i.e. to euro 125,1 million. The main export destinations were again Sweden and Norway. In unit terms, total exports for the same period grew by 53 %. Customs' authority statistics indicate that a total of 6514 boats were exported during Jan-May 2016.
Boat exports to the five main export destinations for Jan-May were as follows:
1. Sweden 37,8 m (+31,2 %) and 3141 units
2. Norway 36,6 m (+17,0 %) and 2838
3. Malta 30,9 m and 2
4. Germany 3,4 m (+23,0 %) and 173
5. France 2,9 m (+110,0 %) and 120
According to 2016 statistics, boat imports also registered strong growth during the January - May period, i.e. an increase of 84 % when compared with 2015. In value terms, boats imported for the same period were mainly from Poland (EUR 3,9 m, i.e. 107 units) followed by the USA (EUR 1,6 m, 171 units) and Italy (EUR 1,1 m, 4 units). In all, boats imported during the Jan-May 2016 period were valued at EUR 29,4 m (+84,1 % compared to 2015).
At this stage, outboard engine statistics are available at the wholesale delivery level for the Jan-June period. In total, 17030 engines were delivered via Finnish importers (i.e. Finland + re-exports). When compared with the corresponding period last year this represents a fall of 0,5 %. Of the total, 8349 (-5,6 %) were delivered on the domestic market.
Based on data supplied by Finnboat member enterprises, 2015 turnover for the marine industry and trade as a whole was approximately EUR 488 million (VAT 0 %). Of this sum, industry exports (i.e. boats and equipment) accounted for some 239,5m euro.
