Women celebrated at Vene 17 Båt on Valentine's Day
The Helsinki International Boat Show, Vene 17 Båt, is held at Messukeskus Helsinki 10-19 February. This year special theme evenings bring targeted visitor groups to the event on weekdays. On Tuesday the 14th of February the theme is lovely ladies and highlights the sailing stories of women and guides women into the world of boating and fishing. The Uusi Aalto WaterExpo offers SUP Fit, Cross and Balance and a fashion show. The highlight of the evening is Anssi Kela's concert.
On weekdays from Monday to Friday the event is open until 8 pm. The themed evenings offer something for everyone: Monday the 13th of February is dedicated to honouring Finland's 100 years of independence. Wednesday the 15th of February is Windy Day and Thursday the 16th of February offers special programme for fishermen. After 5 pm the tickets are only 13 €.
Female sailors inspire peers
On Tuesday visitors get to hear fascinating stories from the world of sailing and boating by women and the aim is to encourage other women into the world of boating and sailing. At 2 pm the stage is taken by supermax sailor Matilda Ajanko who will tell about her journeys around the world. At 4 pm Tea Ekengren-Saurén tells about her experiences in the Rolex Swan Ranking series and at 7 pm ARC winner Annika Norrgård takes the stage. Olympic sailor Tuuli Petäjä-Sirén is on stage at 5 pm. At 3 pm Kenneth Telen gives tips on how to start boating or sailing as a hobby and which classes to take, and at 6.30 pm Anu Syrmä will introduce shared boat owning as an option. At 6 pm the Helsinki-Tallinn Race, which celebrates its 25th anniversary, is presented on the Sailboat harbour stage. The aim is to encourage more leisure time boaters and sailors and families to take part in the race.
Riikka Alvik will share her experiences as a maritime archaeologist at the Loki café at 2.30 pm. At 5 pm commodore Reija Kaira and board member Sara Rosenstedt will tell about the activities of the Sailing Ladies association, one of the fastest growing associations in Finland. The aim is to also acquire new members. Lauri Kaira from the University of Turku will shed some light into the history of sailing among women before the Second World War. The programme of the Sailing harbour stage is organised by John Nurminen Foundation and visitors can also share their own stories and write them down on the log service.
SUP, fashion and pop icon Anssi Kela
The Uusi Aalto WaterExpo focuses on water sports and this year displays also fitness related SUP. Visitors can try out different water sports in the huge water tank built in the exhibition hall. The Beach Fashion Show showcases fashion for summer 2017 on Tuesday 14 February at 6 pm, after which the stage is taken over by Finnish pop icon Anssi Kela. In addition to the fashion show, clothes and accessories for boating, sailing and other maritime activities are also displayed in other exhibition halls of Vene 17 Båt. All the boats are worth seeing but in the spirit of Valentine's Day, one "must see" item is the pink Marino Mustang boat.
Fishing guide Mika "Haukikoira" Vornanen gives a fishing demo at 6 pm in the Rapala Giant Aquarium together with a group of fisherwomen. These fishing enthusiasts give tips to other women on how to begin fishing as a hobby. The tank gives visitors the opportunity to see how different lures act in water and how fish react to them and different fishing styles.

The Helsinki International Boat Show is the biggest boating event in Northern Europe and it is organised by Messukeskus Helsinki 10-19 February 2017. It is commissioned by the Finnish Marine Industries Federation Finnboat. In 2017 the event is organised for the 48th time and the operations of the Finnish Lifeboat Institution are highlighted.
