ICOMIA SMALL CRAFT STANDARDS BULLETIN – EDITION 2014:2
ICOMIA’s Small Craft Standards Bulletin provides industry stakeholders early notification on changes to
existing standards and modifications to production methods; as developed and maintained by the ISO
(International Organization for Standards) Technical Committee for Small Craft Standards (TC 188).
”The TC 188 Plenary meeting held in Baltimore, US, was a busy week of multiple working group meetings, and all the participants and convenors did a great job in reviewing the necessary standards and addressing all the comments submitted via the National Standards Organisations.”
Patrick Hemp, ICOMIA Technical Manager
Each ICOMIA Small Craft Standards Bulletin clearly defines the current stage of the standard depending on whether it is in: Committee, Enquiry, Approval, or Publication. On completion, standards that support the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) requirements are referenced in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).
This step leads to a ’harmonized standard’ which in turn provides a presumption of conformity for a certain legal requirement. A sensible transitional period is determined during which both the revised standard, as well as the superseded version provide the presumption of conformity.
The second edition of the ICOMIA Small Craft Standards Bulletin includes: ISO 8666 – Principle Data which underwent review to maintain its position as the base standard for measurements such as length-of-hull; and ISO 11591 – Field of Vision from Helm Position which has been amended to include sailing craft in an
additional section and also to incorporate some changes to the motor craft requirements.
The ICOMIA Small Craft Standards Bulletin is issued biannually and available to download, for free, from the ICOMIA Online Library.
